Good News Travels![]()
A recent post celebrating Ill. Bro. Keith Widden’s preferment to the 30° has now received 37,824 views and 4,753 engagements.![]()
The figures are remarkable, but what I find most rewarding is what they appear to say about our wider Masonic community: people are still ready to pause, share in someone else’s happiness and warmly celebrate genuinely good news 💝![]()
Keith, who is known to so many throughout West Kent, was unable to attend Duke Street because of ill health. With the authority and approval of the Supreme Council, I was therefore privileged to confer the Degree upon him in his own home 🏡![]()
The setting may have been different, but the dignity and significance of the occasion were undiminished, and the extraordinary response to the original post has allowed many thousands of people to share in Keith’s special moment 👏![]()
The response reached well beyond the District. Among the many people who took the time to offer their good wishes was comedian Jim Davidson, who sent Keith his personal congratulations 🙏![]()
It is both refreshing and heartening to see so many people recognise a well-deserved preferment and join in offering their congratulations.![]()
Well done, Keith. Even at home, you are receiving your just rewards. 👏👏🌹![]()

July is nearly over.![]()
September is getting closer.![]()
Not as a deadline…![]()
but as another opportunity.![]()
Perhaps to visit a different Chapter.![]()
Perhaps to take a small part in a ceremony.![]()
Perhaps simply to enjoy another evening with friends.![]()
Whatever your next step…![]()
it begins exactly the same way.![]()
By opening the book.![]()

Some conversations stay with us long after they’ve finished.![]()
Perhaps it was something said over coffee after a meeting…![]()
during a festive board…![]()
or whilst travelling home together.![]()
Sometimes a single conversation changes the way we see the Order.![]()
What conversation has stayed with you?![]()

A wonderful afternoon at Canterbury Cathedral for the Province of East Kent’s annual Evensong.![]()
It was a privilege for Patricia and me to accept the kind invitation of the Provincial Grand Master, Neil Johnstone, and to join Brethren, their families and friends for this special occasion in one of England’s most magnificent cathedrals.![]()
The beauty of the Cathedral, the dignity of the service and the warmth of the fellowship combined to make for a memorable afternoon. It was also a pleasure to spend time with so many friends and to meet the Very Reverend Dr David Monteith, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.![]()
Our sincere thanks to Neil, Roger Waltham, Graeme Wyles and everyone involved in organising such a wonderful event and for the generous hospitality shown throughout the afternoon.![]()
Days such as these remind us that the friendships we enjoy through Freemasonry often extend well beyond the walls of our Lodge rooms and Chapters.![]()
Thank you 🙏![]()

One of the biggest misconceptions about the ritual book…![]()
is that you have to know it.![]()
You don’t.![]()
It isn’t an examination.![]()
It isn’t something to fear.![]()
It is something to enjoy.![]()
Open it.![]()
Read a page.![]()
Close it.![]()
Come back another day.![]()
Little by little…![]()
it becomes part of your own journey.![]()
Have you opened yours this summer?![]()

Think about your own Chapter.![]()
Who was the person who first made you feel welcome?![]()
The one who quietly answered your questions…![]()
encouraged you…![]()
or simply made you feel you belonged.![]()
Every Chapter has people like that.![]()
Perhaps this year…![]()
that person could be you.![]()
Who helped you most when you first joined?![]()
(Tag them if they’re on Facebook.)![]()

Some members will be opening their ritual book for the very first time this summer.![]()
Others will be preparing to take part in a ceremony for the first time.![]()
Many will simply be looking forward to seeing familiar faces again.![]()
Whatever September holds for you…![]()
your Chapter will be waiting.![]()
What are you most looking forward to when the new season begins?![]()

There Is Nothing Quite Like a Day at Supreme Council![]()
One of the many unique features of the Ancient & Accepted Rite is the manner in which its higher degrees are conferred.![]()
With the exception of the 18th Degree, the 30th, 31st, 32nd and 33rd Degrees are each worked in extenso by the members of the Supreme Council at their headquarters in Duke Street, St James’s.![]()
The Supreme Council is the Sovereign Body of the Ancient & Accepted Rite in England and Wales and its Districts and Chapters overseas. Whilst responsible for the governance of the Order, it also performs these remarkable ceremonies itself, demonstrating ritual of the very highest standard.![]()
These are not shortened presentations or symbolic ceremonies. They are complete ceremonies, delivered with a dignity and precision that make each occasion truly memorable.![]()
For those fortunate enough to witness them, the day is far more than a ceremony. It begins at Duke Street and concludes with dining at Mark Masons’ Hall, where members of the Supreme Council join those attending in an atmosphere of friendship, celebration and fellowship.![]()
If you have never attended one of these ceremonies, I would encourage you to do so whenever the opportunity presents itself. It is one of the finest experiences our Order has to offer and one of the great privileges of Rose Croix membership. I have yet to meet anyone who has left Duke Street without a renewed appreciation of the Ancient & Accepted Rite.![]()
The District of West Kent has every reason to be proud of the recognition recently afforded to a number of our members.![]()
At the Supreme Council meeting on 14th May 2026, the following preferment was approved:![]()
🔸 E. & P. Bro. Rexie Hermano – elected to the 30th Degree (to be conferred on 9th November 2026).![]()
At the Supreme Council meeting on 11th June 2026, the following preferments were approved:![]()
🔸 Ill. Bro. Kelvin Gane – elected to the 32nd Degree (to be conferred on 2nd December 2026).![]()
🔸 Ill. Bro. Phil Clare – elected to the 31st Degree (to be conferred on 19th October 2026).![]()
More recently, at the meeting of the Supreme Council on 9th July 2026, a further three members of the District of West Kent were elected to receive the 30th Degree. Their letters have now been issued, and they will shortly learn of this well-deserved honour.![]()
To all of those receiving preferment, congratulations. Your recognition reflects the contribution each of you has made to our Order, and I very much look forward to sharing these memorable occasions with you at Duke Street.![]()
If you have yet to experience a Supreme Council ceremony, I would encourage you to make every effort to do so when the opportunity arises. There is something truly special about witnessing the Supreme Council itself perform these magnificent ceremonies, before joining together in fellowship afterwards at Mark Masons’ Hall. It is an experience that stays with you long after the day has ended.![]()
Pax vobiscum![]()

The response to Keith’s recent preferment has been truly humbling.![]()
At the time of writing, Keith’s post has attracted 389 reactions, 71 comments and 11 shares from Brethren across West Kent, throughout the United Kingdom and from many parts of the world. Whilst those numbers are remarkable, they tell only part of the story. Behind every reaction, every comment and every share is a Brother who has taken a moment to recognise Keith’s achievement and wish him well.![]()
It is a wonderful reminder that our Order extends far beyond our own Chapters and Districts. What has struck me most is not the numbers themselves, but the genuine warmth, kindness and goodwill shown towards a Brother whom many have never even met. That speaks volumes about the values we all share.![]()
At its very best, the Ancient and Accepted Rite is about far more than ritual or preferment. It is about friendship, compassion, mutual support and rejoicing in one another’s achievements, especially when life’s circumstances make those achievements all the more meaningful.![]()
To everyone who has commented, reacted or shared Keith’s story, thank you. Your messages have demonstrated the very best of our Order and will, I know, mean a great deal to Keith and his family.![]()
This has been a wonderful reminder that whilst we may meet in different Chapters, Districts and even different countries, we remain united by one Order, one shared set of values and one remarkable bond of fraternity.![]()
Thank you all for demonstrating, so clearly, why our Order is so special. 🌹👏![]()
